Well put, but since this is a Jewish blog, let’s give credit where credit is due. Rambam (Maimonides), who lived some 700 years before James, said the same thing: “”And how does a person accustom himself in these [ideal] qualities until he acquires them? He should act in accordance with the middle path multiple times, repeatedly behaving in such ways until such deeds become easy, effortless, and ingrained in his soul.” (Hil. Deot 1:7).

(Don’t know if James ever learned Rambam, but I doubt it, for although he was a polyglot, he attended Harvard over a century after Hebrew had ceased to be mandatory there.)

Hey Geoff –

I really love this – and I use “k’ilu” in reference to holidays and prayer all the time – praying k’ilu it’s all true, even metaphorically – praying k’ilu one has fervent faith, k’ilu one believes and feels the words, k’ilu it makes a real difference in life.

Particularly in terms of it making a difference in one’s attitude and life and perspective, I find it to be true. Which is what your post arrives at as well.

I especially enjoyed this article and thank you for your writings. I write for a women’s website and panic when I find spelling errors, so I wanted to point two out to you…. They are below – in the first paragraph an extra to before the word supposed And in the second paragraph, everyday is missing a letter
